Ambien Discussion

I have been taking Ambien for quite a while and I’ve noticed that it gives me amnesia once it hits me. I barely remember talking to people on the phone, and I have no idea what we talked about. It’s weird because I vaguely remember talking on the phone, but not to who or what about. Eventually on in the day I remember who I talked to, but I never remember what we talked about.

Is this normal?

Chosen Answer:

Yes, it is very normal for Ambien to cause amnesia. There have been a few legal problems because of this; I remember seeing on FOX News a few years ago how there was this bus driver who ran into three mail boxes at three different points in her daily route, and had absolutely no recollection of it when she was questioned about it. She said it was due to taking Ambien but no one believed her, so people who took Ambien started speaking up for her all over the country. One story I remember in particular was how this one lady who takes it daily began waking up and baking cookies in the middle of the night. When she woke up, she had no recollection of baking them, and this began happening nightly. She laughed it off, though, saying that her office enjoys home-made cookies every morning. So, I wouldn’t doubt for a second that Ambien causes amnesia.

Ambien (zolpidem) can cause amnesia. That’s why it’s recommended that it be taken just prior to going to bed. I personally know of an incident of a patient taking the medication, driving to the grocery store, making purchases, driving home and putting the groceries away and the next day not remembering a thing. In that respect, it can be dangerous for some patients.

Don’t answer if you don’t know. If it depends on physical factors, then – Male, 150-200 lbs. Also what would you recommend?

Chosen Answer:

I took 45 mg. and I had dreams of men wearing turbans holding oil lamps. It was really weird. I take dalmane now, a real drug. But I would never recommend you take 45 mg. of ambien. And I’ve tried snorting it and it is best taken orally. I’d just take 20 mg. to sleep at night max.

I was recently (as in today) prescribed Ambian CR, 12.5 mg dosage. I’m waiting until the weekend to actually take one since I’ve heard some weird stories about what it can do and I don’t want to risk it on a weeknight (before work) until I’m used to it. Have you taken Ambien? Would you recommend it? Did you have any side effects? If so, what?

Chosen Answer:

I take AmbienCR…same dosage.
I can only describe my own experiences with it.

First, if you’ve never taken one before, make sure that someone is with you that can keep an eye on you.
Second, take one right before going to bed. The best thing to do is take it while your starting your night time routine. (Cleaning up, brushing, etc.) Then by the time you crawl into bed, it will have started taking effect. Once you’re in bed, it knocks you right out, and you sleep great.
The problems start when people don’t go right to bed after taking it. For some reaon or another, they stay up After about an hour, the drug starts to talk effect stronger. You start to feel intoxicated. Like you’ve got a really good buzz. You’re a bit disoriented, and have trouble keeping your balance. Things don’t quite look or feel real to you
Now is when the potential problems start. People think that they can now “leave the house” and go “do things” Whatever you do, DON’T go driving anywhere. People have been known to do other crazy stuff. One woman awoke to find that she’d painted her front door. She was still lying on the stairs with the paintbrush in her hand. She had no memory of doing it.
I know another who gained over 100 lbs, because she was getting up in the night, and eating everything in the house.
One of the best cases I’ve heard is of one woman who went on-line and ORDERED A CAR at some on-line auction.
Took quite a bit of handy work to get her out of that mess.

My girlfriend told me twice now i’ve gotten up now in the middle of the night just talking about nothing and I have no memory of this. I also make strange phone calls and texts at night to friends and when I wake up don’t have any memory at all of them! Does this happen to anyone else that takes the sleep med ambien?

Chosen Answer:

I got very strange while taking ambien. I ended up in the state hospital for a few days – it took at least 2-3 days to settle down again. I do have serious psychiatric problems, but NOTHING like it was on ambien.

some people go driving while under the influence of ambien and cause accidents. You shouldn’t take it anymore. lunesta works similarly, as do all the benzos. You will probably have problems of some kind with all of them. They are amnesia drugs, thus the memory problems.

Google “sleep hygiene”

Here are my sleep tips:

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even weekends.

Do only boring things that last hour before bed. no exercise, no computer or TV time. Avoid bright lights (the TV and computer screen light wakes you up too). Blue light is the big offender – if you read, use an old-fashioned 60W incandescent light bulb. It has more red & yellow light, and less blue light, than a fluorescent bulb. Or try wearing red glasses – you can get them for a few $$ in the hardware section of a lumber store, near the laser levels (they help you see a laser dot). they will block the blue light.

Make sure your bedroom is totally dark, including covering up that digital clock and shutting the drapes/blinds/shades.

Exercising during the day will tire you out so you sleep well later.

Avoid caffeine. A morning cup of coffee is OK, but nothing after 1 PM or so. Some meds like cold remedies (Sudafed, etc.) can ramp you up, too, look for the “agitation in children” label-some adults get trouble too,

Try meditation like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery. It reduces stress. See The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne for examples. There is a free 15 minute guided imagery download at healthjourneys.com. Try a noise generator or CD of ocean waves or soft music to sleep if you live in the rackety city. Get some MP3 downloads at soundsleeping.com

Don’t use your bedroom for anything but sleep (or sex, if you are an adult). No computer, no TV, no reading in bed.
If you are worrying about what you have to do the next day, then get up and write down a list of what to do, then go back to bed with your mind more at ease.

If these things don’t work after a month or so, there could be something else medically wrong. **Don’t take Ambien, Lunesta, etc. they are addictive and only work a week or so, then you’re hooked and they aren’t really helping anymore, according to research studies. (But you will get rebound insomnia if you quit).** Sleep disorder experts do not usually recommend these drugs.

Good luck! Google this topic and you will find some things I’m sure I forgot.

i am on 50mg of Pamelor which is an anti-depressant. its a low dosage and is used to prevent chronic migraines rather than depression. i’ve been having trouble sleeping lately and want to take an Ambien tonight. would the combination cause any weird problem for me?

Chosen Answer:

It shouldn’t just take one ambien, and it shouldn’t effect you in any negative way, i am on anti depressants, and was on ambien and it didn’t do anything bad.

This is not because I’m looking to high this is because I take higher doses to get to sleep then most.

If I’ve taken 3 ambien two nights then 1 ambien one night then if I take 4 ambien (20mg) b/c of my 5 mg tablets will I get high? That’s IF I don’t pass out ofcourse.

Your answers are appreciated.

Chosen Answer:

It’s hard to say if you will get “high”. The effects of ambien when you stay awake are varied, but usually include weird spacey feelings and a loss of memory. You do things, say things, go places, and don’t remember any of it. People have taken ambien, gone to bed, and woken up in jail, the hospital, or the gutter with no memory of how they got there. Some people die. The more you take, the more likely it is for this to happen. And the more likely dependency and physical addiction are to develop. Which means the withdrawals when you quit will be worse. Withdrawal from ambien and recovery can be like someone opening a door to hell and shoving you through. Recover can take over a year.

  • What Is Ambien (Zolpidem) ?

Ambien is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia).

Ambien is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep). This medication causes relaxation to help you fall asleep.
